One such student is 22-year-old Jabis Manaika. Blind since birth, Jabis frst heard about the SDC after visiting Honiara three years ago to receive treatment from a visiting eye specialist. Jabis began to receive training in Braille from SDC teacher Eddie Babanisi with only rudimentary prior education. “I knew the numbers and letters”, says Jabis, “but putting them together was a different story”. After only a couple of months, Jabis was excelling at the study of Braille. Realising his potential, his family moved permanently to Honiara to support Jabis as he followed his educational dreams. Three years later Jabis is fuent in Braille and dreams of becoming a teacher to share his knowledge with others. He has plans to study English at the University of South Pacifc in Honiara next year. "I want other vision-impaired children in the Solomons to follow in my footsteps and fnd opportunities like I have,” he says. "I believe if blind children can understand how to read and write in Braille they can achieve anything that other children can achieve”.
